Registration microchips

ALL CARS in Portugal could be made to have electronic registration chips in future after a majority vote by the ruling Socialist party approved the measure last month.

These microchips will allow the police authorities to have access to information such as the insurance details and MOT details of vehicles, as well as facilitating the payment of road tolls. Paulo Campos, the secretary of state for public works, said: “The new chip will be a fundamental instrument to increase road safety and reduce road accidents.”

The new law would mean that all vehicles would have to have an electronic registration device fitted, which is expected to cost 10 euros.
