Region’s biggest leisure space opens in August

A NEW leisure space, that is set to become the largest park in the Algarve, is currently under construction at Parque das Cidades in Loulé and will open to the public in August.

Work on the 1.3 million euro project started immediately following the signing of an agreement by the presidents of Loulé and Faro Câmaras at a public presentation held recently. The two câmaras are jointly responsible for the complex that already hosts the Algarve Stadium built for Euro 2004 and that is also projected to host a new hospital and congress centre.

The park will occupy an area of 21.5 hectares and will include, among other facilities, a children’s park, a tennis court, sports ground and three fitness circuits.

During the public presentation of the project, José Vitorino, President of Faro Câmara, emphasised that, due to the serious financial problems of Parque das Cidades, the park, that is considered essential for the region, is only being realised thanks to the concerted efforts from both câmaras. “We believe that we must compensate our residents that have been greatly penalised by the large amount that was spent here,” he said.
