Red alert in Azores: waves could reach up to 25 metres

Six islands in the Azores are on red alert today with winds of up to 155kph expected and waves likely to reach as much as 25 metres.
“The best place for people to stay today is indoors,” said meteorologists who have been working round the clock in the last few weeks as the country and its outlying archipelagos have all received unusual battering from the elements.
The worst affected islands this time round are expected to be Flores, Corvo, Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge and Pico – with the eastern islands of São Miguel and Santa Maria on the lesser “orange” alerts.
Heavy rain is also forecast, with the worst of the weather expected to have passed by midnight on Friday.
