Recycling growth

Recycling of packages in Portugal increased by 15 per cent in 2008 when compared to the previous year, according to the national recycling organisation, Sociedade Ponto Verde (SPV).

In 2008, 535,000 tonnes of packaging, 10 per cent of which was plastic, was recycled in Portugal.

This year, Portugal is due to exceed 52 per cent recycling, as well as its aim to achieve 55 per cent recycling of all packaging materials placed on the market by 2011.

“The quantities continue to increase, which is fruit of consumers’ ever growing environmental awareness,” SPV said in a statement.
