Record crowds

FÁTIMA ATTRACTED half a million people from all over the world on Sunday, May 13, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the apparition of the Virgin Mary. It was the largest pilgrimage since Pope John Paul II visited in 2000.

There was a heavy police presence to ensure crowd safety. Medical staff treated around 1,000 people at the scene and over 100 were taken to hospitals on-site and nearby. An 80-year-old Spanish man died after he felt unwell before the start of the candle procession on Saturday night.
