Wine Enthusiast, one of the most influential wine magazines in the US, nominated Portugal for Region of the Year (Douro) and European Winery of the Year (João Portugal Ramos Vinhos) at its 2013 Wine Star Awards. The prize ceremony will take place in New York on January 27, 2014.
Nominated by the popular magazine amongst the Paso Robles (US), Rías Baixas (Spain), Stellenbosch (South Africa) and Walla Walla (US) wine regions, the Douro Valley is under the spotlight in this year’s edition because of the “tremendous quality of the newly released 2011 Ports” and excellent dry table wines, which “have also made incredible strides in recent years”.
With thousands of subscribers throughout the world, the magazine also recognised Alentejo-based winery João Portugal Ramos, which is widely known for wines such as the Marquês de Borba label. Born into a family with a long history of wine production, João Portugal Ramos began his career as an oenologist before launching his own winemaking venture in 1990. He said: “ It is really amazing that we were nominated for this award and it shows that our hard work is being recognised outside of Portugal.”
