WHILE POPPY Day, on November 11, may be The Royal British Legion’s major event of the year, its members keep quite active throughout the remaining months of the year, raising money to assist members in need of their help and also enjoying each other’s company.
The Algarve sub-branch paid a visit to the Adega do Cantor in Guia, near Albufeira, on Wednesday, May 24, where owner Nigel Birch was happy to give members a guided tour and explain the history of the vineyard, where Sir Cliff Richard’s grapes are processed and bottled, and an outline of the making of this now award-winning nectar. The group was treated to a refreshing taste of the wine on offer and were able to buy a bottle, or case, to put down in their own cellars if they wished.
After the tour, the group enjoyed lunch at the Atlântico Restaurant close by, where chairman Peter Wilkinson proposed a toast to the Royal British Legion, this being the 85th anniversary of its formation on May 24, 1921. The chairman also advised members that the next regular luncheon would be held after the summer break, on the third Wednesday in September, at the Hotel Garbe in Armação de Pêra.
