Rare Bailote paintings on display at Albufeira gallery

An exhibition featuring “rare paintings” by famous Albufeira painter João Barreto Bailote will begin next month at the city’s new art gallery, the Albufeira Art Centre.
Bailote was a self-taught painter who delighted many with his “simplistic yet beautiful” paintings of his hometown of Albufeira. He was born in 1913 and died in 1986 after a lifetime filled with art.

“He really captured the natural beauty of Albufeira. His paintings are very atmospheric and take you back to the time they were painted,” says the art gallery’s manager Rolf Osang.

His gallery currently has 10 Bailote paintings which were given to him by a “private collector in Carvoeiro”, but the exhibition will boast more, as “people are stepping up and offering their own paintings”.

“These paintings are very rare, and are often only found in people’s homes in and around Albufeira. The few that are sold online are often tremendously overpriced, and we hope to give people a chance to buy one for a more realistic price,” he said, adding that a 30x45cm painting will likely cost around €1,000.

Anyone who has a João Bailote painting is welcome to contact Rolf Osang and have their painting displayed at the gallery.

The exhibition will begin on October 4 at 7pm, and will be on display all the way through Christmas.
