Rain to return to Portugal on Thursday

Algarve is in desperate need of rain

After an unusually dry and sunny January, some much-needed rain is finally being forecast for Thursday and Friday across Portugal.

The Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) has placed nearly every district in Portugal on yellow alert on Thursday (February 8) due to heavy rain, strong winds and/or rough seas.

The ‘bad news’ for regions like the Algarve which are desperate for water is that the rainy weather is not expected to last. No rain is forecast for the upcoming weekend, although some precipitation is expected once again on Monday before mostly sunny skies return to the region on Tuesday.

Temperatures will remain relatively mild, particularly for the winter season, with maximum temperatures of 18ºC in the Algarve and 16ºC in Lisbon and Porto and minimums not expected to drop below 11ºC in the Algarve and only dipping below 10ºC in inland centre/north districts.

In a statement, IPMA explains that more weather warnings will be issued over the next few days and urges people to follow updates on warnings and forecasts, “which may undergo some adjustments.”
