Rain for the next seven days “but it’s not enough”

It’s also unlikely to fall much in the Algarve and lower Alentejo – but rain is at least back in the picture in Portugal, with eight districts on “yellow alert” due to the likelihood of heavy downpours.

According to forecasting authority IPMA, the wettest areas will be Viseu, Porto, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Coimbra, Braga and Bragança. Nevertheless, the amount of rain expected is unlikely to make much difference to the overall picture of severe drought.

Rainfall will continue for the next seven days, but, say forecasters, it won’t be consistent and it will reduce in intensity as the time passes.

Areas like the lower Alentejo and Algarve should see the least amount of wet weather, emerging from any chance of showers before the rest of the country.

Needless to say, skies will be intermittently grey, winds ‘weak to moderate’ and temperatures relatively balmy in the south but much cooler in the north.
