Raiders escape with thousands after exploding 10th ATM machine in a month

Yet again, the pre-dawn calm of inner city Lisbon has been shattered by the explosion of an ATM machine from which thieves appear to have stolen “several thousand euros”.

This latest blast was registered in a café in the centre of town on Rua Pinheiro Chagas.

The modus operandi involved first breaking into the cafe, and then “exploding the ATM machine” from the inside.

It was the 5th attack of its kind in a month in Lisbon, while there have been five others in Leiria in the same time period.

According to national tabloid Correio da Manhã, police now are “trying to discover if there is a relation between the raids”.

They all happen between 4am and 5am in the morning, they all involve explosives and they tend to take place shortly after machines have been ‘stocked up’ with fresh supplies of notes.

The latest raid in Lisbon took place “just a few metres” from the Israeli embassy, writes CM – describing it as the “one of the most highly-surveilled” embassies in the country.

For now, ‘suspects’ appear to be “three men using an Audi car on false plates”.
