Race track prepares to receive Superbikes

The moment all Algarve-based motor sport fans have been waiting for will finally arrive in exactly seven days time.

The first European round of the World Superbike (SBK) and Supersport 2010 Championships is coming to Portimão adding real glamour to the city’s brand new Motor Park.

Whereas Britain’s leading riders Leon Haslam and Jonathan Rea will have plenty of followers in the SBK class, most of the on-track excitement will be generated by the participation of the home Parkalgar-Honda team in the parallel event.

More familiar with the undulating 4,592 metre state-of-the-art track than most of the field will be current leader Eugene Laverty. The Northern Irishman, winner of the Phillip Island opener in such convincing fashion just a fortnight ago, took his career victory total to five and made himself the 13th most successful rider in the series- not bad for a man with only 17 race starts to his credit.

Topping that particular statistic is immediate rival Kenan Sofuoglu while returnee Sebastien Charpentier has one less chequered flag with 13. Another former Supersport champion, Fabien Foret, one of seven in the Portimão field to have tasted victory in this class, will be looking to better his tally, but both form and local knowledge should see Laverty in front as the 835m home straight is reached mid-afternoon on Sunday.

The Parkalgar-Honda team will be co-hosting a special presentation of its sponsor’s new Honda CR-2 E PCX125 sports hybrid models over the weekend of March 27 and 28, giving spectators ample opportunity to inspect the latest technology at first hand.
