Querença celebrates the snail

Querença, the delightful village in the borough of Loulé, is hosting its annual ‘Festival do Caracol’ (Snail Festival) this weekend (June 3 and 4).

They may sound like a strange thing to eat, but snails are one of Portugal’s favourite summer snacks.

Cooked in water seasoned with garlic and oregano, snails are usually enjoyed alongside a cold beer.

A variety of snail dishes can be tasted at the festival, which begins at 4pm each day in front of Querença’s church.

There will also be a fair featuring local products and handicraft, while entertainment will be provided by singer/organist Ruben Filipe.
