Quercus sees red over felling of centenarian trees in Vila Verde

Environmental NGO Quercus has accused Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) of “the manifestly unnecessary” felling of 18 centenarian trees along the EN101, in the borough of Vila Verde (Braga district). IP however claims the felling was “absolutely necessary to improve driving conditions and the comfort of road users”. The spat is just one of many incidents in which Quercus accuses IP of indiscriminately cutting down cork oaks and other indigenous trees along national roads, due to ‘technical criteria’ which the NGO believes needs to be amended.
