news: Quality jazz and genius art raise money for bombeiros

MOST PEOPLE have heard of painting by numbers, but guests and members of Silves Rotary Club witnessed painting by a genius recently. Those fortunate enough to attend the club’s ‘Jazz by the Beach’ night saw the creation, in just 30 minutes, of an outstanding painting that was later auctioned. A work of art by 78-year-old Lisbon artist, Hilário Roberto, was just one of the events that helped raise money for the Silves Bombeiros.

Over 80 people, including Rotarians from Faro, Portimão, Praia da Rocha and England, created a fun atmosphere at Ferragudo’s Praia Grande beach, where they enjoyed the finest jazz by the Algarve’s own New Orleans Jazz Band. An auction of paintings and a raffle contributed to the evening’s entertainment and fundraising.

The event raised over 850 euros, which included a donation made by the venue management, Bar-Restaurante Nau.

Event organiser, Rotarian Herbert Chatters, told The Resident: “It was an excellent evening, supported magnificently by the area’s residents and Rotarians. The atmosphere created by the strains of quality jazz was unique and the raffle was supported by all who attended.

“The club is dedicated to raising 5,000 euros this year to assist the bombeiros, and the event got us off to a good start. We have another similar event at Restaurant Portarade in Ferragudo, on Saturday, October 22, but, this time, due to space restrictions, the entertainment is by a solo artist. He is an internationally known instrumentalist and singer, who has entertained in Europe, America and on cruise ships. This will be a fantastic night, with a special five course meal and wine for only 25 euros per person.”

Full details and tickets can be obtained from Isobel Flores on 919 334 550, but book early as numbers are limited to 48.

• Anyone who missed seeing the remarkable talent of Hilário Roberto at the Rotary event can still see his work until the end of September, by visiting the Dona Barca Restaurante at the Sardine Docks in Portimão at lunchtime and in the evenings.
