Two students from the International School of the Algarve in Porches participated in the National Public Speaking Competition organised by the British Council and held in its offices in Lisbon.
This year, there were 28 competitors representing 17 schools, some public and some international. The theme chosen by the organisers this year was “The Wisdom of Youth”.
Two students from the International School of the Algarve, José Miguel Quintas and John Roy Dommett, both from Year 11, travelled to Lisbon with their teacher to take part in the event.
In the first round, John Roy qualified to become one of the 10 finalists. After the second round he was selected as one of the final four.
The overall winner was Beatriz Rocha from Colégio Moderno in Lisboa with the International School of the Algarve’s John Roy Dommett winning second place.
John Butterworth, headmaster of the Algarve international school, said: “The school’s two participating students are congratulated on their fabulous use of the English Language, demonstrated during this competition in a very agreeable way in the presence of students, parents, guests and teachers.”
Beatriz Rocha will be representing Portugal at the International Public Speaking Competition to be held in London in May this year.
