Public sector workers strike with “strong adhesion” today

Today’s public sector workers strike is reported to have “strong adhesion” across multiple services. Schools are closed throughout the country; waste disposal workers are not collecting rubbish. The results of the latter are being most keenly felt in the capital. Elsewhere most hospitals, particularly those in urban areas, are running with ‘minimum services’. Another ‘casualty’ of this 24-hour strike are “centres for electronic vigilance”. Demands causing this strike are for much better pay (an increase of €90 across the board for public sector workers, plus a national minimum wage of €850, not the €705 suggested by PS Socialists). The government is offering only 0.9% as next year’s increase.
