The Public Prosecutor’s Office said today that defendants in the second case over the death of Ukrainian citizen Ihor Homeniuk in 2020 at the facilities of SEF, immigration and borders service, at Lisbon airport should be tried – emphasising that the investigation validated the accusation. Former director of SEF borders agency, António Sérgio Henriques – dismissed from his post following the death – faces charges of denial of justice and malfeasance. Inspectors João Agostinho and Maria Cecília Vieira are accused of negligent homicide by omission, and security guards Manuel Correia and Paulo Marcelo are charged with kidnapping and unlawful exercise of private security activity. Already, three border guards are serving jail terms for the beating they inflicted on Mr Homeniuk, which resulted in a slow and agonising death.
