Rui Rio seems determined to lead his party into the January elections, in spite of a fairly lacklustre record in opposition

PSD’s internal leadership battle sees Rangel start getting his way…

The extraordinary leadership battle ongoing within the PSD centre-right party ahead of legislative elections in January has seen contender Paulo Rangel ‘win through’ in his insistence that internal elections should take place on November 27 and involve ONLY paid-up members of the party. Current leader Rui Rio wanted the elections earlier (November 20 ) and ‘thrown open’ to all PSD militants, whether or not they were fully paid up in terms of ‘quotas’. The tactic would have widened the scope of voting – and possibly played into Mr Rio’s favour. As it is, an eight-hour meeting of the PSD national council in  Aveiro yesterday decided Mr Rangel’s proposed plan of action was the one to go for. Rui Rio has not emerged from this latest development in a stronger position.
