Roger Schmidt to coach Benfica after two-season contract signed.
German football coach Roger Schmidt has said that he is “proud to be the new coach of Benfica“, which he described as a “great club”, in his first statement to the official media outlets of the Primeira Liga club after his appointment for two seasons was formally announced on Wednesday.
“Proud to be the new coach of Benfica and enthusiastic about the challenge at this great club,” reads the statement issued by the coach, reproduced on the Benfica website. “Together, we will use all the energy and experience to succeed.”
Schmidt, 55, coached Netherlands team PSV Eindhoven from 2020/21 until the end of this season. He previously coached clubs including Beijing Guoan, Bayer Leverkusen, Salzburg and Paderborn.
Benfica had in April announced an agreement in principle with Schmidt, who replaces Nélson Veríssimo, the interim coach who had led the team since December 2021, after the departure of Jorge Jesus.
