Protests planned in Tavira

Members of the newly reformed PROBAAL group in Tavira have planned protests as part of a direct action campaign to raise awareness about the construction of a quarry in nearby Cerro de Leiria (see the Algarve Resident edition February 5).

At a meeting held on February 22, the group was officially reformed with António Dário de Sousa Viegas taking the position of president.

Members stated in their opening meeting that they would “move forward using new tools and the experience of the past” in their fight against the quarry.

The first protest against the quarry by members is due to be staged on March 5 outside Tavira Câmara.

“We are hoping for between 20 and 30 people to turn up.  The protest will be as part of a sustained presence outside the Câmara every week so nobody will be able to forget that the problem is ongoing and will not go away,” said Amanda McGregor, assistant to the PROBAAL board.
