Protests over ‘right to housing’ scheduled for six cities

With practically no sector ‘happy’ with the government’s housing programme, citizens today are staging protests in Lisbon (Alameda), Porto (Batalha), Viseu (Praça da República), Aveiro (Praça Melo Freitas), Coimbra (Praça 8 de Maio) and Braga (Coreto da Avenida Central), accusing PS Socialists of not having gone far enough. Measures outlined in the controversial ‘Mais Habitação’ blueprint “are insufficient”, protestors say – demanding rent regulation, the suspension of evictions and an end to property speculation. More on these protests which begin at 3pm tomorrow.
