An anti-bullfighting demonstration organised by activists group Cidade de Albufeira Anti-Touradas (CAAT) will be taking place outside Albufeira bullring the same night the venue will be hosting a bullfight televised by state-owned TV station RTP.
Members of the group are encouraging anyone who shares their anti-bullfighting sentiment to join them on August 22 at 8.30pm, and bring along “placards, whistles and megaphones”.
However, they have warned that “offences will not be tolerated as the protest is against practices and not against people”.
The group has been gaining regional notoriety for its many protests outside the Albufeira bullring – some of them televised – and was recently featured in the Resident in an article by Algarve journalist Len Port.
The group says many foreign holidaymakers are unwittingly mistreating their children by taking under-age youngsters to bullfights, as they are “blatantly exposed to animal cruelty” every time they witness one.
The protest will be the group’s second in two months, having already staged one on July 16.
