Protected natural area neglected

Regional environmental group Almargem is concerned about environmental damage in Ribeira de Quarteira, a protected natural area between Albufeira and Loulé, due to the lack of management by the authorities.

A spokesman for Almargem said: “Several acres of protected land, flora and habitats have already been destroyed in this area of great ecological value because there is no authority taking care of their preservation.”

The association says this has led to the area being neglected and exposed to potential urban development.

The management of Ribeira de Quarteira is shared between the councils of Loulé and Albufeira and the Institute for Nature Conservation and Biodiversity. However, Almargem said, “their presence in the area has not been seen.”
