“Prospect of nuclear conflict now back in realm of possibilities”

In yet another speech warning of the dangers facing humanity, António Guterres, secretary-general of the United Nations, has said that “the prospect of nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, is now back within the realm of possibility… it is time to stop the horror unleashed on the people of Ukraine and get on the path of diplomacy and peace”. Mr Guterres spoke these words announcing a new package of humanitarian aid, totalling €40 million. He talked also of “close talks” he has been having with “China, France, Germany, India, Israel and Turkey, on mediation efforts to bring an end to this war. The appeals for peace must be heard”, he said, on the day that ‘peace negotiations’ between the two sides suffered a ‘technical pause’. Ukraine’s president Zelenskyy has described the negotiations as “difficult”, but the Ukraine position maintains: immediate ceasefire followed by withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.
