Processions mark the month of April in Tavira

VARIOUS RELIGIOUS events, forming part of the Easter celebrations, are due to take place in Tavira this month, including Procissão do Triunfo (April 9) and Procissão do Enterro do Senhor (April 14).

The Procissão do Triunfo (Procession of Triumph) takes place on Palm Sunday at 4pm, setting off from Tavira’s Igreja do Carmo. This parade demonstrates the life of Christ from the Mount of Olives until his death. Records exist which confirm that this religious pageant was organised as early as 1789 by the Carmelite Order of Tavira. In Portugal, the processions on Palm Sunday were always the responsibility of the Carmelite sisterhood.

Procissão do Enterro do Senhor (Procession of Christ’s Burial) takes place at 9pm on Good Friday, departing from Igreja da Misericórdia. It is likely to be quite a spectacle as illumination will be provided by hundreds of candles. This religious event was established in Portugal in the 15th and 16th centuries and is now integral to the tradition celebrations of Holy Week.
