Nurses in the private sector are on a 24-hour strike, ending at midnight, for better pay and conditions. This is the second strike by nurses working for private hospital groups like Lusíades and CUF who have, up until now at least, failed to reach an agreement with the association that represents the hospitals, the Portuguese Association of Private Hospitalisation. According to reports, a number of programme surgeries at various units have had to be cancelled.
