Private doctors to be empowered to issue ‘sick notes’

In a new effort to ‘make citizens’ lives easier’ (this was the pretext given), the minister of health has announced today that doctors in the private and social sector are to be allowed to issue sick notes, and certificates of temporary incapacity. Up until now, people requiring these declarations could only get them from their family doctor, within the SNS health system. As millions do not have a family doctor – and those that do have often to queue pre-dawn outside health centres just to get an appointment – widening the field of manoeuvre into the private and social system will indeed make the whole process simpler, if at a cost.
