Prickly pear challenge

The Prickly Pear Challenge is taking place at the Junta de Freguesia of Martim Longo, in Alcoutim, on September 1.

Participants have to prepare a sweet, cake or drink using the fruit. There are many recipes made with the prickly pear, also known as cactus fruit, cactus fig or Indian fig. Its juice is often used to make sauces, jam, sweets, vinaigrettes and cocktails.

The contest forms part of the parish council’s plans to promote local produce, particularly the prickly pear (Opuntia Ficus Indica), honey, almond, acorn and carob.
