Portugal remains the fourth most expensive country in Europe to buy petrol, with prices almost 20 per cent higher than in neighbouring Spain.
Statistics revealed by the European Commission showed that the average price for 95 unleaded fuel in the country was 1.319 euros per litre compared to 1.107 euros per litre in Spain.
The only countries with higher fuel prices than Portugal within Europe were Holland, Finland and Denmark, where average prices per litre are in excess of 1.349 euros.
