Megasa, the former national steel works with factories in Seixal and Maia, has suspended production at both sites because it simply cannot afford to run them due to the increased costs of gas and electricity. At risk are 700 direct jobs, 350 indirect jobs, and an export portfolio equivalent to a billion euros per year. More on this drama to come, but bosses have said they believe they could continue if the government uses ‘mechanisms of support’ for this very purpose.
