Presidents' of Covilhã protest closure of primary school

The presidents of two parishes in Covilhã barricaded themselves into their council offices on Monday in protest to the closure of the area’s primary school. Their demonstration was timed to take advantage of a visit by the education minister Nuno Crato to the university (Beira Interior) nearby. The school is due for closure as a result of the government’s cost-cutting plans which involve shutting every primary school with less than 21 pupils.
