The sixth President’s Cup golf tournament, held at Praia D’El Rey near Lisbon this year, raised 16,000 euros for the local community.
Miriam Sofia Rebelo Tomaz, the seven-year-old daughter of a volunteer bombeiro in Óbidos, was born paraplegic and 6,000 euros will go towards the purchase of an electric wheelchair to significantly improve her mobility and the lives of her family.
The remaining balance will be used in the local community for a selection of worthy causes, such as subsidised help with meals for ‘poverty-stricken’ families in Amoreira, meals-on-wheels for the elderly who are unable to leave their homes, the purchase of school supplies for children whose families cannot afford to buy the basics and a contribution towards heating for the local elementary school.
Stuart Swycher, president of the Beltico Group, owners and operators of Praia D’El Rey, said: “This year a 100 euro donation was made by every player participating in the President’s Cup. Andrew Williams from Cushman & Wakefield, who participated in the event this year, announced he would match the total and, additionally, some of our owners at Praia D’El Rey also donated cash. It was a great team effort!
