Presidential ‘race’: candidate drops out

Manuel Carvalho da Silva, the former secretary general of workers union CGTP, is reported to have dropped out of Portugal’s presidential race despite having said more than once that he wanted to run.

According to TVI24, the decision is “final” and was revealed last night to a group of people who had been helping him with his bid for presidency.

The online news portal adds that the 66-year-old was only days away from some “decisive meetings” that would formalise his candidature.

The fact that Sampaio Nóvoa (former Lisbon University’s rector) presented his bid for presidency (see story https://www.portugalresident.com/president-hopeful-wants-to-be-%E2%80%9Ceverything-cavaco-was-not%E2%80%9D) recently is named by TVI24 as the main reason behind the ex-union leader’s withdrawal.
