Presidential elections: votes could be collected house-to-house

With new restrictions to curb the pandemic potentially on the way, Jornal de Notícias reports on a plan for voting slips for the presidential elections in January to be collected ‘door-to-door’.

Says the paper, the government and municipalities have been “working” on the idea “in the sense of guaranteeing that everyone can exercise their right to vote” even if “many thousands of Portuguese are obliged to stay in isolation”.

Indeed the whole electoral process has to be ‘rethought’ because of the pandemic, with voting halls likely to have more ‘tables’ so that people are not crammed together “risking the propagation of the virus”.

Measure brought in will “invariably make the electoral process more expensive”, adds the paper.
