President starts two-day official visit to Moldova

Portugal’s president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa begins a two-day official visit to the Republic of Moldova, the first by a Portuguese head of state. He will meet his counterpart Maia Sandu and give a speech to university students. The first day is to be spent in talks with a signing planned of a letter of intent for educational cooperation between both countries’ universities, while the second day will also see the signing of a memorandum between the Portuguese Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade (AICEP) and its Moldovan equivalent. Portugal’s support for Moldova, in terms of its bid to join the European Community and its vulnerability in terms of proximity to Ukraine has been a matter close to Marcelo’s agenda, particularly since the Russian invasion began in February last year.
