President reacts to reports that “people are stealing to eat”

President Marcelo has reacted to the story today that people are stealing to eat by calling a Council of State for October 28, to discuss the economic and social situation. He told reporters earlier this afternoon that until poverty is addressed, Portugal will only go backwards. He said he hopes sufficient European funding can be secured to haul society up from the depths in which too many are struggling. Referring to the country’s ‘anti poverty strategy’, he said “we must do what the strategy proposes so that by 2030 we can substantially reduce what is a brutal level of poverty”, exacerbated in the last few years by the pandemic and now following the war in Ukraine.
