President Marcelo has today promulgated the extinction of borders and foreigners agency SEF in spite of a last minute appeal for reprieve by the syndicate representing SEF inspectors. Even so, a date for the end of SEF is still some way off. A note on the president’s site explains he is leaving it to the “prudence of the legislator as to the necessary time to proceed with the transition (of the decision) into law”. This will involve the setting up of APMA – the new Portuguese Agency for Migrations and Asylum (see main menu for story to come on SEF’s feelings of its competences being handed to ‘racist’ police).
