President of Portugal to attend Olhanense centenary dinner

BY CHRIS WRIGHT

SC Olhanense was founded on April 27 1912 and a week of festivities start tomorrow (Saturday) at 10am, when officials of the club and the local dignitaries will raise the club flag in honour of 100 years of service to the community of Olhão.

Supporters are welcome at the José Arcanjo Stadium for the ceremony followed by a visit to the house in Rua Almirante Reis where the original meeting took place in April 1912.

The main event a week later, a gala dinner and presentation evening at the Real Marina Hotel and Spa, will be attended by 500 guests including the Guest of Honour, His Excellency, President of the Republic Prof. Dr. Aníbal Cavaco Silva.

The President was born in Boliqueime and as a 13-year-old, he flunked at the 3rd grade of the Commercial School, so his grandfather put him working on the farm as a punishment.

After returning to school, Aníbal Cavaco Silva went on to become an accomplished student and eventually studied at the University of York where he was awarded a doctorate in economics. The President, who was Prime Minister from 1985 to 1995, is an Honorary Socio-member of Olhanense.

Most of the players are expected to attend the dinner including Tavira born goalkeeper Bruno Verissimo who signed for the club in 1995. He has made 273 appearances and is still a member of the first team squad.

Next week we will be reporting on the illustrious history of the Algarve’s top football team.
