Portugal’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has marked the 480th anniversary of the Portuguese arriving in Japan, reaffirming his “unwavering commitment” to deepening relations between the two countries. In a note on his official website, he wrote: “Today, August 25, 2023, the President of Portugal marks the 480th anniversary of the arrival of Portuguese navigators in Japan, highlighting their first contact with the Japanese people, on this same day in 1543, which took place on the beach near Cape Kadokura, in Tanegashima.”
