President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was the surprise guest at a recent event to mark the 25 years of the Almancil social and cultural association ASCA.
Members of Almancil International Rotary Club (AIRC) have been associated with ASCA for years and were delighted to be invited to attend the celebration, which included the laying of the first stone to the new ASCA nursery and pre-school.
President Marcelo took time out from his holiday in the Algarve to attend the ceremony, which was hosted by the president of ASCA Hermes Alberto.
Other attendees included the Mayor of Loulé Vítor Aleixo, the president of Almancil parish council Joaquim Pinto and Fernando Caldas, a representative from Ikea which made a substantial donation.
The crèche is estimated to cost in the region of €1.5 million and is expected to be concluded by the end of 2018.
Marcelo spoke briefly with AIRC president Claire Busbridge and told her “how nice it was to meet yet another president”. He was also “impressed” with the cooperation between AIRC and ASCA.
