An impromptu interview with Portugal’s ‘people’s president’ Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is causing hilarity on social media this morning because the baby-faced journalist who asked the questions didn’t know who he was talking to.
Stopping Portugal’s genial head of state outside the UN building in New York, 28-year-old Martin Weill – not long ago dubbed the sex symbol of France’s Canal + Petit Journal – asked him whether he was concerned about the outcome of the US elections.
Diplomatically explaining, “well, you know, we have a principle which is we don’t speak of problems of other countries, mostly friendly countries”, Marcelo prepared to take his leave, when Weill asked him what delegation he was with… and what was his office?
Clearly unfazed, President Marcelo smiled broadly and said: “I am the President of the Republic of Portugal”.
The interview stopped there much to roars of laughter from Canal+ headquarters where the news anchor gave Weill a thumbs up for helping along Franco-Portuguese diplomatic relations.
