President Cavaco…

Dear Editor,

I wonder if it is just me … I used to have a high opinion of Portugal’s President Cavaco Silva many years ago, but nowadays he seems to do little more than address the nation from time to time to say … virtually nothing at all!

As a head of state, he seems to want to make as little noise as possible, and even the press struggle to make much of what he says. Except of course when he commented on Madeira’s “big bananas” recently and the press had a whale of a time – which was clearly the journalists’ way of saying “this is absolute nonsense”!

I sincerely hope the next president will be a much more proactive individual, willing to cause a stir from time to time. We need someone who is level-headed of course but who is also capable of showing a little more emotion!
