THE WORLD’S most successful exported rock festival is set to return to Lisbon’s Bela Vista Park in May 2006.
Rock in Rio, the international rock festival created by Brazilian impresario Roberto Medina, will be staged over two consecutive weekends – on May 27 and 28, and June 2, 3 and 4.
It will be the second time that Rock in Rio is organised in Lisbon. In 2004, shortly before the European Football Cup, the musical event drew in big pop and rock headliners, such as Paul McCartney, Britney Spears, Evanescence, Foo Fighters, Alicia Keys and Alejandro Sanz. The event will be co-organised by Lisbon Câmara and Rock in Rio Inc, and is likely to include big name sponsors. So far, the organisation is remaining tight-lipped about which names will make the line-up, but promises that it will be bigger and better than in 2004.
Roberto Medina, executive director of the event and owner of the product, says the main objective for the coming year is to follow up with a great show along the lines of the one hosted in 2004. He is also planning to export the product to other world capitals such as Sidney.
