Albufeira Câmara and the national electricity board, EDP, are to sign a protocol for high tension power lines to be buried in Alto dos Caliços in south eastern Albufeira.
According to the Câmara, this work will improve the energy supply in the county and avoid the population being subjected to the electromagnetic fields generated by high tension power lines above ground.
“For the defence of the environment and the health of residents in the council, the Câmara is investing more than three million euros for the power lines to be buried along 1,600 metres,” said a statement released by the Câmara.
The work will take place in two phases. The first will coincide with the renovation works along the EN 395 road, so that any necessary cables can be laid down at the same time.
A second phase is due to start in the second half of 2011, with work expected to be complete by 2012, after ground levelling works along Paul Harris road, which is also due to have renovation works.
