Power sharing crisis talks

TALKS IN Zimbabwe are continuing as President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai discuss the future of the country and power sharing initiatives.

The talks are being mediated by ex- South African President Thabo Mbeki after he brokered a deal last month to share power in Zimbabwe.

Morgan Tsvangirai had threatened to pull out of the talks after Robert Mugabe gave key ministries within the government to his own supporters, a move that was described by the US state department as “overstepping the bounds of the agreement.”

President Mugabe allocated ministries including defence, home, foreign affairs and justice to his Zanu-PF party at the weekend.

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai wants all the cabinet positions to be revisited and discussed as had been previously agreed, however Robert Mugabe has said only one ministry, finance, is up for discussion.

At the time of The Resident going to press the talks were continuing.
