Poverty rising

In Portugal, 1.9 million people live on less than €421 a month, or below the breadline, revealed the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Following a study on the living conditions and income of the population in Portugal in 2010, it was concluded that the most affected by poverty are families with three or more children, representing 34.5% (+1.3% on 2009).

The number of people living below the breadline increased slightly in 2010.

In the same study, it was revealed that the number of people paying in excess of 40% of income toward housing expenses had increased from 4.2% in 2009 to 7.2% in 2010.
