Portuguese women caught smuggling cocaine under wigs

Spanish police outsmarted and arrested two Portuguese women who plotted an almost ingenious plan to smuggle over a kilo of cocaine through Madrid Airport by keeping the stash hidden under a false wig.
The women, 18 and 28, boarded two separate flights from the same location – the Brazilian city of São Paulo – but were both caught red-handed with six small packages containing a total of 1.2 kilos of cocaine which were stuck on to the inside of the wig, the Interior Ministry of Spain revealed in a press release.
The entity considered these manoeuvres “a new sophisticated and hard to identify method of smuggling drugs” due to the quality of the wigs.
Spain’s close ties to South America have made the country one of the main entry points for cocaine. In 2012 alone, over two tons of cocaine was seized in that country, representing over 40% of the confiscated amount of cocaine in Europe.
