Portuguese textile industry against China

PORTUGAL’S FEDERATION of textile companies is asking Economy Minister Manuel Pinho to propose more restrictions on imports from China.

The companies want Portugal to use its future position in the European Council to vote on the subject. According to a recent report, Brazil announced the intention of increasing taxes on imports of textile and shoes from 20 to 35 per cent. The US, Russia, Mexico, Turkey, Peru and Argentina are also more restrictive on textile imports, most of them coming from China.

Now, the Portuguese textile industry fears that the European market is being used by Chinese companies to sell their products, since there are fewer restrictions. The textile federation alerts the Minister for the fact that human rights issues remain to be solved in China and that that should be considered for discussion when Portugal takes over the presidency of the European Council.
