Portuguese table tennis coach voted ‘best of the year’

Portuguese table tennis coach Pedro Rufino has been named ‘2014’s Star Coach’ by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

The distinction follows his fantastic performance as the man who led Portugal’s national team to its European champion title last September, beating Germany 3-1 in the tournament’s final at Lisbon’s MEO Arena.

“I was already proud to be nominated, but actually winning Coach of the Year is fantastic,” Rufino said, cited by the national table tennis federation (FPTM).

“The players had a fantastic year which put me here. The prize is also theirs,” he added.

Marcos Freitas, one of the team’s stars, was nominated for ‘Male Table Tennis Star’ but saw the award go to Nigerian Aruna Quadri, who plays for Portuguese club GD Toledos.

The national team now has a chance to build on last year’s success as it is currently participating in the ITTF World Team Cup, which features “the world’s 12 best teams”. It began yesterday (January 8) and will be running until Sunday.
